How To Meet People In A New City.

Be social at work: If your move involves a new job, don’t hide in your cube all day. If your company holds staff lunches, has a community service club or goes out for impromptu happy hours, join in! You will spend 40+ hours a week with these people; the work day will be more enjoyable if you have a relationship with them. And who knows, you may even like them enough to hang out on your own time.

Join a club: Do you love to run, read, bike or ski? Chances are, there’s a club in your area for people who share your interests. Look online or for flyers at your local library or in the newspaper for sports and special interest organizations. Many are free or inexpensive to join, and the other members are likely looking to meet new people, too.

Tap into your network: Even if you don’t think you know anyone who lives in your new city, you probably have a friend who does. As you spread the news about your move, take people up on their offers to introduce you to the people they know in your new city. You already have a shared connection, and if nothing else, you can get together for coffee or a sightseeing tour. You may even be introduced to their friends, which before long may become your friends as well.

Volunteer: Volunteering is a great way to meet other people in your city. Pick an organization you believe in – an animal shelter, homeless shelter, tutoring program, disease-prevention – and go to a meeting or event they are sponsoring. Not only will you meet new people, you’ll be helping a worthwhile cause in the process.

Go online: Just like online dating is no longer taboo, neither is looking to the web for friendship. Websites like Meetup.com are specifically designed for people who want to meet others who share a common bond, like fellow moms or outdoor enthusiasts. Find a group that sounds intriguing and go to one of their events. If you don’t mesh well, try other groups until you find a fit.

Find local alumni: If you went to a big enough college, there is likely a local chapter of your alumni association nearby. Swapping college stories is an instant way to bond, and you may even run into a familiar face at an alumni happy hour, volunteer project or baseball game.
